The English Springer Spaniel is a moderate sized breed that has long ears that are shaped like pendants. While the dog should be sturdy, it should not be overly heavy. The tail will typically be docked, and the front legs should be straight. While these dogs will have powerful heads, it should be in proportion to the rest of the body. These dogs should also have eyes which are medium in size, and they should either be brown or hazel in color. The ears should be long enough to reach the top of the nose when it is held forward. The teeth should form a scissors bite, and English Springer Spaniels will have powerful jaws. The coat should be wavy and moderate in length, and the colors should be black, white, blue, or liver.
The English Springer Spaniel was heavily used as a hunting dog during the Renaissance. It is the dog that many other English Spaniels originated from. It has been popular in the United States since the 18th century.
The vast majority of English Springer Spaniels are friendly dogs that are excellent with children. They are intelligent and obedient, and can be trained easily. They have lots of energy, and love to play. Despite the fact that these dogs have their tails docks, they will still wag them. English Springer Spaniels will behave best when they are in the presence of people. If they are left alone for extended periods of time, they can begin developing behavior problems. They are good with all pets except birds. They may bark excessively if they are left alone.
English Springer Spaniels can easily gain weight, so they should never be overfed. They may also develop hip dysplasia, epilepsy, PRA and other eye problems. Yeast infections in the dog’s ears are also a possibility, but weekly cleaning of a susceptible dog will help keep this problem at a minimum.
A rare genetic condition may mean that this breed shows some aggression to other dogs and humans in adulthood. .Although it should be noted that this condition is exceptionally rare, before you purchase this dog, you will want to look at its genetic line to help reduce the possibility of this occuring in the adult dog. English Springer Spaniels have a maximum life expectancy of 14 years.
These dogs enjoy extensive amounts of exercise. In fact, exercise is necessary for English Springer Spaniels to be cheerful. They will want to be taken on long walks, and owners will also want to unleash them in secure locations.
Special Grooming Needs
The coat of the English Springer Spaniel will generally need moderate amounts of care. Owners will want to use a brush which has strong bristles, and it should only be given baths when it is needed.
