Description
The English Cocker Spaniel is a medium size breed of dog. They stand between 15 to 17 inches in height and weigh between 26 to 34 pounds. They are a compact breed. Their most recognizable feature is their very long ears that reach at least their nose. They have dark, oval eyes. Their noses are black or brown. Their tails are usually docked at birth. They have very unique, round feet. Their coats are soft and medium in length. The fur on their feet is feathered and shorter. Their coats can be many different solid colors or color combinations. These colors include but are not limited to, black, white, liver, and red. They almost always have some white markings on the chest and feet.
The exact year that the English Spaniel was created is unknown but many speculate it was around 1300. It was nearly 500 years after that, that the breed was divided into seven sub breeds, one being the English Cocker Spaniel. The breed was used as hunting, as still is to this day. The breed also is used for companionship.
Temperament
The English Cocker Spaniel has a very pleasant temperament. They are a lively breed, and every energetic. They are extremely playful, sometimes hyper active. They do very well with children as they are gentle and affectionate. They do not tolerate teasing though and may nip if they are being mistreated. They are very outgoing but can also be reserved at times. They are very dominant and often do not like being around other dogs. English Cockers used for hunting usually are too active to be family pets, but those not used for hunting make wonderful companions.
Health Problems
English Cockers Spaniels are very prone to ear infections. Their ears must be checked daily and cleaned weekly. If not properly cared for, an ear infection could cause deafness in an English Cocker Spaniel.
Exercise
English Cocker Spaniels most have a great deal of exercise. They are active both indoors and outdoors. They are suitable for apartment living but do best when they have a yard to play in. They are not a breed that tires easily and will never be too tired to play. They enjoy any and all games and methods of play.
Special Grooming Needs
English Cockers Spaniels require a good amount of grooming. Their coats must be brushed or combed regularly. The breed sheds an average amount. They may need to be bathed weekly. Frequent trimming of the feet and ears is also recommended. Most importantly their ears most be cleaned regularly, twice a week is best. |
