The ideal Mastiff should have ears which are dark in color. The teeth or scissors may be a bit undershot. The tip of the tail will be tapered, and the color of the coat will either be apricot, brindle, or fawn. The Mastiff has a coat which is short and smooth.

Country of Origin

Temperament

The Mastiff has always be praised for its abilities as a guard dog. Indeed, one glance at a Mastiff is enough to stop most intruders dead in their tracks. Despite this, the Mastiff is gentle for a dog of its size. It is alert, patient, and loyal to the person that owns it. This is a breed of dog which doesnt bark a lot. However, it will defend its territory against any outsider that enters it. The Mastiff can be docile, and is excellent with children. Hoever, it can easily hurt infants or toddlers because of its weight, so they should always be kept away from it. The Mastiff is a breed which is well balanced. While it can match or surpass a German Shepherd or Rottweiler when it comes to being a guard dog, it can be an excellent family dog as well.

Health Problems

Because of its weight, the Mastiff is susceptible to hip dysplasia. This breed may also develop bloat as well, and owners will want to make sure they are not fed excessive amounts of food. The Mastiff should only be fed two meals each day. Females may develop vaginal hyperplasia, and the breed may develop PRA as well. Despite these problems, the healthy Mastiff can live longer than a decade.

Exercise

Because of their size, Mastiffs are prone to laziness. However, giving them sufficient amounts of exercise will make them both healthy and cheerful. Due to their size, you will obviously not want to keep them in your apartment. Mastiffs should be kept in large yards where they have plenty of room to move around. They should never be unleashed when they are around people they arent familiar with.

Special Grooming Needs

The Mastiff has a short coat which is easy to groom and care for. It sheds a standard amount, and should only be bathed when it is needed.
