Affenpinscher Dog Breed Description

Description

The Affenpinscher is a smaller breed of dog that is great for a lap dog, weighing about seven pounds on average and standing 10-15 inches in heights. The breeds exact origins are unknown, but it is believed by many that the breed is related to the Brussels Griffon and the terrier.

Affenpinschers were first used as farm dogs, so it is probable that when first created they were much larger and have been bred down over the years to the size that they are today. They are avid hunters of small rodents, but used today mostly for companionship. The breed is most commonly black but can also be dark gray and red in color. Their fur is long with a slight curl and They have strong bodies, and despite their small stature, are not delicate in any way.

Also Known As

Moustached Little Devil

Temperament

The Affenpinscher is a very intelligent breed. They are similar to the terrier in their general temperament. They are playful and are usually great around other pets and children. But, they are a very stubborn breed and can be difficult to house train, so it is imperative that you continue with a structured regimen when training an Affenpinscher for anything. It is important that when training a Affenpinscher that you show who is boss. They are fearless breeds who, like most terrier breeds, do not realize their own size. The Affenpinscher is a loud breed of dog, often constant barking can become a problem with an Affenpinscher, but they are also great watchdogs because of this trait.

Health Problems

The Affenpinscher is a relatively healthy breed overall. However, because of their short noses respiratory problems can occur sometimes, especially in hot weather, so it is not recommended that they be exposed to overly hot or cold temperatures. Some dogs of this breed may also be prone to fractures, so it is also recommended that they not be allowed to jump off of or onto larger objects that can cause falls or other injuries.
