Belgian Tervuren Dog Breed Description

Description

The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren is an elegant breed that has a slim body. Despite this, it has a well proportioned frame, and will feature an excellent carriage. It has powerful hindquarters, but they are not very large. These dogs have small eyes which are shaped like almonds, and they should be dark in color. The ears of the Tervuren should be triangular in shape, and should stand up. While the muzzle will taper, it should not be sharp. The teeth of these dogs should be in the form of a scissors bite. While the dewclaws on the front legs may or may not be removed, the dewclaws on the back legs must be removed.

The Tervuren has an extensive coat which is dense, and it should be gray, fawn, or mahogany.

Also Known As

Belgian Tervuren
Chien de Berger Belge

Temperament

The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren is one of the four major sheepdogs in Belgium. It is an alert breed which has a serious personality, and it may sometimes be shy. Owners will want to make sure it is properly trained while it is a puppy. It should be exposed to other people and animals, and while owners will want to be consistent with their training, they should never be harsh. The Tervuren is a protective breed, and is used for police work because of its characteristics.

Health Problems

These dogs are generally very healthy. Some may develop epilepsy, skin problems, or eye disorders. The Tervuren should never be overfed, as it can quickly become overweight and lazy. These dogs have a maximum life expectancy of about 14 years.

Exercise

The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren is a dog that was bred to work. It is at home outside, and owners will want to make sure it is given extensive amounts of exercise. While it can live in an apartment, owners will want to make sure it gets the exercise it needs. It should be allowed to run free in a secure area. These dogs prefer to live in cooler climates, and they should be given large amounts of shade if they are kept outside during the summer months.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs have extensive coats that need to either be brushed or combed each day. Any mats that form will need to be removed, and males will shed large amounts once a year while females will shed twice in a single year. Owners will want to make sure the patches of fur around the legs and feet are cared for as well. These dogs will shed fur consistently, but the amount will generally be small.
