About the Puli dog breed:
Description

The Puli is a Hungarian dog breed that was used as a sheep dog. It is moderate in size, and has a long, elaborate coat which is distinctive. Once these dogs become adults, their coats can extend to the ground. The acceptable coat colors may vary in different countries. In the United Kingdom, acceptable coat colors for the Puli include gray, apricot, and black. White is also acceptable, but it is a rare color. The body of the Puli has a square shape, but it is muscular. When you look at it from the side, the Puli should have a head that is shaped like an egg. The tail must curl over the back, and the eyes should have an almond shape with a dark color. The ears should be moderate in size.

Also Known As

Hungarian Puli
Hungarian Water Dog

Country of Origin: Hungary

Temperament

These dogs are renowned for being loving and reliable to their families. They are the ideal family dog breed, and can adapt to virtually any environment. They are highly intelligent, and are easy to train. At the same time, they can also be independent, which is a common trait in sheep dogs. The Puli is known for performing well in obedience trials, and they should never be vicious, though they may be cautious around people they are not familiar with. The Puli is an excellent watchdog, and will be quick to warn its owners of potential threats.

Health Problems

There are no major health problems that are found with this breed. Any high quality breeder that sales these dogs will make sure they are not susceptible to developing eye disorders or hip dysplasia. The Puli has an average life expectancy of 12 years, but some have been known to live longer than this.

Exercise

These dogs have large amount of endurance, and owners will want to make sure they are given sufficient amounts of exercise. These dogs will perform best when they are allowed to run play on their own. Owners will want to let them loose in a wide open area that is secure. While some of these dogs are skilled swimmer, others may not be. These dogs can adapt to any environment, and will do equally well with owners that live in apartments or on farms.

Special Grooming Needs

The long coats of these dogs will begin to grow when they are 6 months of age. It is important to make sure the coat does not become matted. If clumps form in the coat, owners will want to manually separate them.
