Temperament

Poodles are energetic dogs that are extremely intelligent. Because they were bred to hunt, they are very independent. Because of their intelligence, they need consistent mental stimulation. This is a breed that can easily become bored. They are exceptionally sociable, and love being around humans. They make fine watchdogs, and are great with children. Trainers have found that Poodles are simple to train. Overall, the Poodle is a mellow breed that is reliable to their owners. However, if owners dont train them properly, they can be stubborn.

Health Problems

There are a number of health problems that have been found in Poodles. Though they are generally healthy, they may develop entropion, cataracts, lacrimal duct atresia, or trichiasis. The Poodle has a maximum life expectancy of 15 years.

Exercise

Because the Poodle was bred to hunt, it needs to get extensive amounts of exercise. Owners will want to make sure it is taken on long walks, and it is a great jogging partner. It may also be good to let the Poodle run free in an enclosed area. This is an excellent breed for those that live in apartments. However, apartments dwellers will want to make sure these dogs are given the proper amount of exercise. The Poodle is a skilled hunter, and may display this instinct.

Special Grooming Needs

The coat of the Poodle is hypoallergenic, and these are good dogs for people who have allergies. As you can imagine, the Poodle is an elegant dog that requires extensive amounts of grooming. Owners will want to make sure the coat does not become matted, and the coat may need to be trimmed. There are a number of products available in pet stores that can be used to care for the Poodle.
