About the Otterhound dog breed:
Description

The Otterhound is a large breed that has a thick coat. Shaggy fur covers their faces, and they also have prominent eyebrows. They have large heads which are broad, and could be likened to a Bloodhound. They have dark eyes with long ears, and their tails should always curve upward. The Otterhound also has a large nose which is dark in color. These dogs also have a dense undercoat which allows them to swim in cold water. The base color of the coat will either be wheaten or grizzle in color, and it may also have black patches. The Otterhound has feet which are webbed, and this allows it to excel at swimming.

The Otterhound is an old breed that has existed for many centuries. As the name implies, these dogs were bred to hunt otters. This is a noble dog which was the pet of many Kings. In fact, it was one of the most popular breeds of the British royalty, and was used by Elizabeth I.

Country of Origin: United Kingdom

Temperament

The Otterhound is an energetic dog which is brave. It is friendly and loyal, and makes a great companion. Even though these dogs enjoy being around children, they may unintentionally hurt toddlers, and should not be allowed to play with them. They get along well with other dogs and pets, and is not shy around strangers. The Otterhound is a breed which is intelligent and independent. However, training them requires large amounts of patience, because they may not easily respond to commands. Owners will want to be stern without being abusive.

Health Problems

Some Otterhounds may develop hip dysplasia, and they are also susceptible to getting bloat. They should not be fed excessive amounts of food. They may also develop hemophilia, and can easily gain large amounts of weight. The Otterhound has a life expectancy of about 12 years.

Exercise

You will want to give these dogs lots of exercise on a daily basis. They need to be exercised in a safe location, and if you have access to clean water, the dog should be allowed to swim as often as possible. Once these dogs pick up a scent, they will head in the direction of the smell, so owners will want to keep control of them. The Otterhound is excellent for owners who enjoy jogging.

Special Grooming Needs

The coat of these dogs may become matted, so owners will want to brush or comb them on at least once a week. Unlike many dogs, their coats need to be washed often. These dogs should have coats with a natural look, and it should never be cut.
