The Kerry Blue Terrier is a breed of dog which is medium in size. It is has a muscular frame, and will have a coat that is either dark blue or black. Some of these dogs may also have a touch of gray or brown. Even though these dogs are born black, they must be dark gray or blue after 18 months to qualify as show dogs. This breed of dog also has whiskers which are very large. Their nose will almost always be black in color, and their eyes should be dark as well. Because of this, it has to be trained. These dogs wont bark unless they have a good reason to do so. The Kerry Blue Terrier is a good breed for skilled owners who are comfortable training them.
Kerry Blue Terriers are a healthy breed of dogs which have long life spans. However, they are susceptible to conditions such as cataracts, entropion, and tumors. A healthy Kerry Blue can live as long as 15 years.
Kerry Blue Terriers enjoy extended walks. They are athletic dogs which need lots of exercise. It is possible for them to exercise indoors. They are the perfect dogs to keep inside your home or apartment, and they can also function well in a small yard.
Special Grooming Needs
These dogs will need to be groomed roughly every two months. Their hair will need to be taken out of their ears, because they can easily develop ear infections. These dogs require extensive amounts of grooming, and the owner may need to be trained on how to do this properly. Kerry Blue Terriers need to be bathed and brushed on a weekly basis. If this is not done consistently, their coat will begin to smell. If you plan on taking your pet to dog shows, it will need to be professionally groomed. This breed of dog rarely sheds hair.
