About the Keeshond dog breed:
Description

The Keeshond is a small dog breed that has an appearance which is similar to the Samoyed. It has ears which are shaped like triangles, and they should stand upright. The tail should be moderate in length, and the acceptable coat colors for this dog are gray and cream. The outer coat is elaborate, and is very impressive to look at. The eyes of these dogs should have a chestnut shape. The markings are distinct, and these dogs will have marks around their eyes. The Keeshond is an artic breed which was first introduced in the United States in 1920. These dogs would often be used to keep watch of boats.

Also Known As

Chien Loup
Deutscher Wolfspitz
Dutch Barge Dog
German Spitz

Temperament

The Keeshond is a great dog for children. It is intelligent, active, and cheerful. These dogs are easy to train as long as their owners are consistent. Owners will want to use patience when training them, and when they become excited, they may jump around in circles. These dogs are sociable, and enjoy being around people. These dogs do not like being alone, and need to feel that they are a part of the family. The Keeshond will function well with other pets, and it is important for owners to make sure theyre trained while they are puppies. This breed makes good watchdogs, and is quick to warn their owners of potential danger.

Health Problems

Owners will want to make sure they dont overfeed this dog. The Keeshond can gain weight quickly, and it may also develop hip dysplasia, heart problems, or skin disorders. The Keeshond has a maximum life expectancy of 15 years.

Exercise

These dogs only need medium levels of exercise. Owners will want to walk them each day, and they should also be allowed to run free in an open area that is secure. However, they should not be given too much exercise, as they could develop knee problems. While these dogs can live in apartments, they will function best in medium sized yards. Because they are artic dogs, they enjoy living in cool climates. They can not deal with hot weather, and owners who live in warm regions will want to protect them during the summer months.

Special Grooming Needs

While the Keeshond has an elaborate coat, it does not need large amounts of care. The coat should be brushed daily, and it should only be cleaned when it is needed. These dogs shed large amounts of fur, and this will occur two times a year.
